The Gospel According to Wilco

I’m a Wilco fanboy. I just saw my third Wilco show, and it blew my mind, once again. I love coming across bits of the Gospel buried just below the surface of pop-culture and music. Here are a collection of gems from Wilco.

“Maybe the sun will shine today
The clouds will roll away
Maybe I won’t be so afraid
I will understand everything has its plan
Either way”
— Either Way

“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
— Matt. 6:34

“I’m going away
Where you will look for me
Where I’m going you cannot come
No one’s ever gonna take my life from me
I lay it down
A ghost is born”
— Theologians

“Jesus then said, “I will be with you a little longer, and then I am going to him who sent me. You will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.”
— John 7:33-34

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
— John 10:11

“But the Holy Spirit will come and help you, because the Father will send the Spirit to take my place. The Spirit will teach you everything and will remind you of what I said while I was with you.”
— John 14:26

They don’t know nothing
About my soul
About my soul”
— Theologians

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.”
— Matt. 23:15

“And I will always die
I will always die
I will always die
So you can remember me”

It’s a war on war
It’s a war on war
There’s a war on
You have to lose
You have to learn how to die
If you want to want to be alive.
— War on War

Them’s got eyes, let them see.”

“Music is my savior
I was maimed by rock and roll
I was maimed by rock and roll
I was tamed by rock and roll
I got my name from rock and roll”
— Sunken Treasure

“Music is the art of the prophets and the gift of God.” — Martin Luther

“I was last in line
For the one true vine
Endless winding prayer
I was dead at first
I had done my worst
And you came to me

Life had ceased
I was lost and tired
You set me free
From this mighty, mighty fire
Just in time to be
My one true vine

You still come to me
And you comfort me
The only one that I believe
I trust you
I hope that someday you will
Trust me too
I wanna be what you are to me

Life had ceased
I was lost and tired
You set me free from
This mighty, mighty fire
Just in time to be
My one true vine”
— One True Vine

“I am the true vine…”
— Jesus (John 15:1)
